Marine Fallen Hero Memorial Unveiled

This past Friday, the hard work of the many members and friends of NAIOP culminated at the unveiling and dedication ceremony of the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion/NAIOP Fallen Hero Memorial Monument. Our chapter has been working on this project for over a year. Many NAIOP members and sponsors have dedicated their time, talent and treasury to this endeavor. Additionally our annual golf tournament proceeds have been directed to supporting the Marines and Sailors of 1st MSOB. We should all take great pride in the finished monument and our small part in honoring these fallen warriors of the 1st MSOB.

“The monument is a reminder to all those Marines, sailors, family members and visitors to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion’s headquarters building of the ultimate sacrifice made by these warriors,” said John Garrigan of LBA Realty, a former Marine aviator and current NAIOP board member and community involvement chairman. “Moreover, it is a permanent fixture that will withstand the test of time and be a great reminder for generations of future Marines of their legacy and the sacrifices made by those who went before them.”

The pinnacle monument, designed to symbolize the battalion’s insignia, measures two feet by two feet six inches by three feet at its base and eight feet tall. The granite slab pinnacle sits atop a base of precast concrete with the names of the battalion’s five Marines who have been killed in action engraved in the stone.

NAIOP member and former Marine aviator John Turpit created the design and provided architectural services for the memorial, while another NAIOP member, Jack Burger, acted as general contractor. Many additional NAIOP members and sponsors worked together to bring the memorial to fruition.

“Our industry is in the business of creating the places where San Diegans work, shop and thrive, and the Marines of 1st MSOB are in the business of protecting that way of life,” said Paul Twardowski, president of NAIOP San Diego. “All of our members are grateful for and humbled by the personal sacrifices made by these Marines.”

For the last six years, NAIOP San Diego and its members have supported the Marines through NAIOP’s Adopt-a-Platoon and Adopt-a-Marine Buddy programs over multiple deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. NAIOP members have sent supplies and care packages to Marines and Sailors of 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion overseas, hosted welcome home parties, assisted with job searches for Marines transitioning out of the service and much more.

“Our Adopt-a-Marine programs have been wonderful avenues for our members to demonstrate their gratitude to the members of 1st MSOB and their families,” said Twardowski. “We are proud to further demonstrate our enduring support by dedicating this monument to the fallen Marines of 1st MSOB and the unwavering, faithful vigilance of the U.S. Marines.”
